España – September 24, 2012

August 27, 2012

Ravel Alborada del grazioso
Rodrigo Concierto de Aranjuez, John Alac, guitar
Falla Suite El sombrero de tres picos
Ravel Boléro

The season begins in Spain—all red, black and hot. Falla and Rodrigo are the real Spanish deal—what is more Spanish than a guitar (Rodrigo’s concerto with soloist John Alac) and a three-cornered hat (Falla)? Ravel’s mother was Basque, so his ‘Spanish’ blood gave him easy access to the ‘Olé!’ that springs from Alborado del grazioso and Boléro.

Mahler Symphony No. 9

Moving on to Vienna, we hear Mahler’s Symphony No. 9, which received its première there in 1912. This is Mahler’s last completed symphony. It is epic in concept, with the famous final Adagio showing that Mahler managed to come to terms with his own imminent demise.

Schafer Scorpius
Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 2, David Jalbert, piano
Rachmaninov Symphonic Dances

In Russia, we celebrate Prokofiev’s incredibly modern Piano Concerto No. 2 (with Ottawa’s David Jalbert as soloist), that saw the light of day in 1913. Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances are a glorious contrast. We also celebrate the 80th birthday of the great Canadian composer, R. Murray Schafer, with a performance of his Scorpius.
The Rite of Spring – May 13, 2013
with guest conductor Marco Parisotto

Murphy Fallibility, Logic and the Return of Wonder, Jeremy Brown, alto saxophone
Stravinsky The Rite of Spring

No full-sized orchestra can ignore the riot that occurred on May 29, 1913 in the Théâtres des Champs-Élysées at the première of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. The piece is now a concert staple! We also feature the Ottawa composer Kelly-Marie Murphy’s saxophone concerto Fallability, Logic and the Return of Wonder, written for Jeremy Brown, who will be our soloist.

All performances at 8:00 p.m. in Southam Hall, National Arts Centre.

Backstage Tours & Pre-Concert Chats
We invite you to take a short tour backstage guided by one of our musicians, during which you will also meet Conductor and Music Director, David Currie. Tours are limited to 12 audience members on a first come, first serve basis. Meet at the OSO table in the foyer by 6:45 p.m.

What better way to appreciate and enjoy the concert you are about to hear than with some insight about the composer and his music? Join us for pre-concert chats at 7:15 p.m. with Christopher Moore, Assistant Professor at the School of Music of the University of Ottawa to learn more.
