About Susan
Susan has been a member of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra since 1979: as English Horn player from 1979 to 1984 and as Principal Oboist from 1984 to the present day. She has an active career as a freelance musician, performing frequently with many different ensembles and choirs in the Ottawa area including the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Thirteen Strings, and l’Ensemble Prisme, in addition to being a member of The Harmonious Pigs Reed Trio with fellow OSO principals Shauna Barker and Ben Glossop.
Susan is a dedicated teacher, working with music students of all levels in her private studio in Deep River, Ontario. She is the director of the Summermusic day-camp and is conductor of the Deep River Youth Orchestra. Susan also enjoys working with adult amateur musicians in community orchestras and with CAMMAC. In addition to her work as a professional oboist, Susan is an accomplished recorder player and piano accompanist.
Susan obtained her Bachelor of Music in Oboe Performance from the University of Ottawa in 1980, followed by post-graduate studies in the Orchestral Training Program at the RCM in Toronto. When she is not busy with musical activities, Susan enjoys cryptic crossword puzzles, cooking, and outdoor pursuits such as gardening, camping and snowshoeing.
